This Is Our Story

In the heart of Birmingham, Alabama, there’s a powerful story unfolding — a story of neighbors, hope, and rebuilding. It’s called Six Pratt Community & Economic Development Corporation.

The name itself carries meaning. “Pratt” comes from the Pratt City area, one of Birmingham’s most historic African American communities — a place built by hardworking families whose labor helped fuel the city’s industrial rise. The “Six” represents the six neighborhoods that make up this proud community:

• Central Pratt – The heart of the area, known for its deep history, strong church communities, and the spirit of resilience that has carried it through generations.
• North Pratt – A quiet, residential area filled with families who take pride in their homes and the tight-knit bonds between neighbors.
• Sandusky – Once a mining community, Sandusky still carries echoes of Birmingham’s industrial past, where hard work and unity shaped everyday life.
• Smithfield Estates – A thriving neighborhood that reflects both stability and growth, with well-kept homes and active neighborhood leaders.
• South Pratt – A place where community life flourishes, home to local gatherings, schools, and small businesses that bring energy to the area.
• Thomas – One of the oldest and most storied sections, Thomas holds deep roots in Birmingham’s steel and mining heritage and is known for its enduring sense of pride and community.

Years ago, leaders, residents, and visionaries from these six neighborhoods decided they could do more if they worked together. Out of that shared determination came the Six Pratt Community & Economic Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 and dedicated to strengthening families, rebuilding homes, and reigniting economic growth across all six neighborhoods.

Today, Six Pratt is more than just a name — it’s a movement of local pride. The organization nurtures community spirit through neighborhood projects, family support programs, and economic initiatives that bring jobs and opportunity back to the area. Every meeting, every event, and every partnership carries the same goal: to honor the legacy of those who built Pratt City while preparing a brighter future for the next generation.
